We have started off by learning how to draw basic shapes like cylinders, spheres and cubic shapes. The first shape we have attempted is cylinders. The way to draw them is to draw two oval shape, one at the top and one at the bottom and connect the the oval shapes with line on both side and here you have a 3d cylinder shape. To make it hollow, simply draw a smaller oval shape at the top and highlights the spider line so it looks more realistic. Spider line is the line where the 'spider' will disappear when it walks over the edge.

Then moving on to the next shape, spheres. The way to draw them is to draw a dotted cross and use each of the 2 lines as the centre of the oval shape. Like this you will get 2 intersecting oval shape perpendicular to each other. Then, with both the ends of the two oval as guidance, sketch a circle. And finally a 3D sphere is created. The overall result was alright, however i need to work on more on drawing the same oval shape size for each sphere or the sphere will just look compressed and not aesthetically pleasing.

For the last basic shape: blocks/cubic shapes.
To sketch them in 3D, we have learn how to use 3 point perspective. Firstly, draw a horizon line which represents the actual height of the viewer's eyes when looking on an object. Then place 2 dots on the horizon line and 2 more dots out of the line, one being the top closest corner and another one being the bottom closest corner to the viewer and of course they need to be aligned vertically. Now connect the top and bottom dots to the 2 dots on the horizon line and create a back corners of the block by placing 2 dots on the line one on each side of the closest corner to the viewer. Now just play around with the marked out dots and you will get a 3D block.

After learning to draw all three basic shapes, we are given an object to sketch and I chose this toaster. I used some of the techniques that i have learned to make this sketch easier. I drew a 3D block with the toaster's dimension, to guide myself while sketching the toaster so that the toaster will not be out of shape and looks weird. Moreover, i used spider line so that the toaster will look more realistic and 'alive'.

Afterwards, I have picked more different kinds of objects and attempted to draw them. The end-result came up to be pretty decent and i was pretty satisfied. However, i realised that i need to work on more on cylinders as you can see the picture on the left, the cylinder curvature is different between the top and the bottom. Other than that, the new technique i have mastered which is the usage of the 'coloured wall' at the back of the 3D drawing allows my work to kind of 'jump out' of the page which makes the work alive.

  1. Some good photos - but you need more detail in your write up. Level 5.
